Yes, winter! The winter season appears green, because in winter there is kale and kale is the quintessence of green! For a long time kale was only known to a few lovers of hearty cabbage dishes. “Grünkohl und Pinkel” – kale and a special sausage – is a very typical dish of the northern part of Germany. But in the last years the health effects of kale and its ingredients became public and it had its boom on the healthy lifestyle scene. It has been praised as the non plus ultra of healthy foods, a source of never-ending youth and power. Well…

First of all: kale is a true beauty in dull winter gardens, its bright green illuminates the grey in grey of the cold season. And indeed, kale is healthy! It contains a lot of carotenoids, antioxidants, calcium, vitamins c and b – nutrients which keep us healthy on the inside as well as the outside.

Cooking destroys a lot of valuable nutrients. That’s why kale is so good in smoothies – ideally directly from the field into the mixer. We can boost the healthy effects by adding other fruits rich in nutrients: carrots, which are the leading carotenoid-containing vegetables, oranges for a boost of vitamin c, potassium and secondary plant substances. We add banana to satisfy our inner sweet tooth and mint leaves for freshness. And if you are feeling super luxurious, then grant yourself a teaspoon of superfoods like wheatgrass or barley grass. Your smoothie is now chock-full with vitamins and secondary plant substances.

Such a drink protects our skin, our cells, our eyes, even our intestinal health. It leaves us looking fresh and healthy, gives us energy for the dark season and – yes, maybe – it is a little fountain of youth.

Ingredients for a huge glass of green smoothie:

  • 60 g kale
  • 60 g banana
  • 30 g carrot
  • 200 g orange
  • A few mint leaves ( I used pineapple mint)
  • 1 tsp wheatgrass powder
  • 1 tsp barley grass powder
  • water

Mix all ingredients in a blender, as smooth as possible. It helps to start with the soft ingredients or the ones rich in water. Mix the fruit puree with water until you reach the desired consistency. Cheers!
